Marine power
Trolling motor runtime starts with measured current.
Motor voltage, speed, current, trip length, reserve, charging time, connection, and mounting conditions all change the battery choice.
Direct answer
A 24 V trolling motor uses two matched 12 V batteries in series; a 36 V motor uses three. Series wiring adds voltage but not amp-hour capacity. Motor current, trip length, reserve, charging time, and marine installation still set the battery size.
Before the hardware
Collect these four inputs.
- 01Motor voltage
- 02Current by speed
- 03Trip duration
- 04Charging time
Decision table
Series-voltage reference
| Motor voltage | Matched 12 V batteries | Bank Ah | Required check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 V | 1 | Same as one battery | Motor current and trip time |
| 24 V | 2 in series | Same as one battery | Equal model, age, and charge state |
| 36 V | 3 in series | Same as one battery | Equal model, age, and charge state |
Do not mix battery models, ages, capacities, or states of charge in a series bank.
What makes it work
Three choices that need to be checked together.
Marine batteries
Select from voltage, measured current, trip hours, reserve, chemistry, and mounting.
View the categoryCharging
The charger needs the correct bank voltage, chemistry profile, current, and shore connection.
View the categoryMaintenance
Storage charging can protect the bank when the exact maintainer supports the chemistry.

Know before you buy
- The supplier feed does not yet include the 100 to 200 W panels needed for a compact house-bank kit.
- Runtime cannot be stated without motor current at the speed you use.
- Series banks require matched batteries and a charger designed for the full bank voltage.
Common questions
Short answers, limits included.
How many batteries do I need for a 36 V motor?
Three matched 12 V batteries in series provide 36 V. Their amp-hour rating does not add.
Can I mix an old and new battery in series?
No. Use matched model, capacity, age, and state of charge to avoid imbalance and early failure.
How do I estimate trolling runtime?
Use measured motor current at your normal speed, battery usable amp-hours, trip length, and a reserve margin.
Can the same charger serve a 24 V bank?
Only if it is designed for 24 V and the battery chemistry. A 12 V charger cannot charge the full bank.
